World Day of Prayer for Creation

Show Mercy to our Common Home

United with our Orthodox brothers and sisters, and with the support of other Churches and Christian communities, the Catholic Church today marks the “World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation”. This Day offers “individual believers and communities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live.” The rest can and should be read here:

. … ..While Papal Earth Day (PED 9/01) is likely to ruffle the feathers of the right winged wacko* -traddies, and most certainly be ignored by the left winged enviro-wacko’s, the opinion of this ‘quasi-traddie Catholic environmentalist’ is that: a papal address on the environment is important. My reason you ask? They are simple.Modern environmentalism has been under the control of the tie-dye and  deadlock wearing ultra liberal leftist anti-Catholic lobby for so long that they believe they are the sole proprietors of that field of study. One sided experts… .

In pope Francis encyclical on the environment , and his world day of prayer for the care of creation , he need not join the ranks of those on the left. What he can do is remove the far lefts ownership of an environmental agenda. He can restores a field of study to all that have the right to participate in that discussion, independent of the left winged political agenda. His concern should shifts the environmental agenda from those who worship “mother earth” back to those who worship the  God of all Creation. A papal address should allow Catholics to continue to participate in environmental issues independent of those that so frequently attack their Christian faith. It allows for a framework for Catholics to address , formulate, and articulate a formal environmental platform that is uniquely their own and based on the Christian Faith. That environmental position then can be linked with other Catholic Social Teachings in the same way that leftist environmental positions are often linked to other leftist social agendas. That makes for a  easily identified agenda highlighting the Catholic opinion . That type of Christ centered political platform gives assistance to the  likes of Rick Santorum, and Marco Rubio. Rick&Marco ran under a platform that highlighted their Catholicism. Did they have an environmental agenda? Of course they did, it is a presidential requirement! It is a rebuttal to the likes of Clinton and Sanders. The rebuttal is important. Rebuttals are important, they require an examination much like an examination of conscience.

Regarding adding environment into the corporal and spiritual works of mercy as Pope Francis suggested ? Is tacking on extra mercies the only way to accomplish this? Couldn’t one simply consult those traditional works of mercy while contemplating creation (aka the environment) ? That I fear is another discussion.

*wacko is a common term used to describe environmentalists.

“O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned
and forgotten of this earth,
who are so precious in your eyes…
God of love, show us our place in this world
as channels of your love
for all the creatures of this earth” (ibid., 246),
God of mercy, may we receive your forgiveness
and convey your mercy throughout our common home.
Praise be to you!
