Friday of the first week of Lent

For the past couple of days I have extracted the theme of the examination of conscience and repentance from the gospel readings. Yesterday and todays readings complete the discussion. For the first examination, there was my own thoughts and behavior, that is sins of my own conscience or where I let my mind wander. For the second there was that examination of the society I live in, and how society influences my choices.The third is examining how I interact with those around me. In yesterdays reading Jesus tells us that whoever is angry at their brother is liable, whether one acts on that anger or not.He calls for reconciliation with those I have offended, and also those who have offended me.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you,
