I am going to prepare a place for you

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?”

I wonder when many read this quote, how many envision this dwelling as a place in (the) heaven(s); a place to go after life and when one leaves this world? That was the mindset of the day with God residing in another world, and to a large extent the mindset today, yet isn’t it more reasonable to think of this place prepared for me as a place right where I am today and in my present life and time? In the Easter story there are many places Jesus resided in this life. He entered a specific timeframe at the nativity, he taught on a well known lakeshore and argued at an extravagant temple. He suffered and was crucified at Golgotha and died  there and was buried there. That was a specific place and a specific time. All of these places existed between his nativity and his ascension during the time he was visible to them. In the ascension, they all looked towards the heavens when he ascended  yet did that point to the moon as the place prepared for us? Did it point to a star or distant galaxy,or did it point to the ground beneath our feet? Was it the same ground as the manager rested on, and the temple, and the cross, and the grave? Was it the same ground only now prepared for us, made ready for us, sanctified for us? Wasn’t that why God sent his only son to dwell among us, to prepare a place for us, or restore that place of our dwelling ? That ground before Christ was where people dwelled yet it was far from God’s kingdom. It was the corruption that placed God in the fringes of mans world, yet that same ground where Jesus restored that kingdom through his preaching at Galilee. It was the same ground where Jesus was scourged and crucified by men playing the role of God, and again that same ground where Jesus revealed God’s infinite love for us. That is the ground that Jesus prepared for us and continues to prepare for us.It is that ground he was placed in, and the same ground of his ressurection. It was prepared through his passion, death, and resurrection and tilled by the disciples and made fertile through those acts of the Apostles as described in that book. It is that same ground continually prepared through his church and nourished through the Holy Spirit. That doesn’t mean we should think that God has not prepared a place for us when we leave this place, but instead when thinking of what was prepared for us to think of what was done for us today and every day. The dwelling place prepared for us awaits us wherever we are.“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?”
