“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
-Gospel Lk 9:22-25

What does it mean to deny oneself ? One interpretation might be to declare oneself to be untrue, or rephrased a bit, to deny oneself is to confess ones sins. It is to declare our pride, and then surrender it to God. One way of looking at confession is to examine all of the ways we deny God , and in doing so deny the truth in our lives. It is the humility that Christ so often talks about. It is the realizing ones own worth as poverty, and submitting to the greatness of God. It is admitting our poverty versus Gods wealth. If denying ones self is looked at as a confession of ones sins, then picking up ones cross can be seen as penance for those sins as following Christ is moving away from those sins and returning to God. Lent is a penitential season.
