They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

While there are many interpretations of the story of the paralytic lowered from the roof, here is a very loose interpretation based simply on the imagery of the scene in an old testament context in relation to the journey of Gods chosen people. The chosen people, like the man on the stretcher, are on a journey. In imagining an ancient people carrying something closely resembling a stretcher the ark of the covenant comes to mind. That was in a sense what carried those people on their journey to the promised land. As they journeyed they faced much opposition and this paralytic also faced opponents preventing him from reaching his destination. When the ancients reached their promised land, one of their first goals was to build a house for that ark of the covenant to rest in. They built a house of God, the temple of Jerusalem. The paralytics destination too is a house where God resides, Jesus the Christ. At the temple the ancients offer sacrifice for their sins, and to pay homage to their God. At the house the paralytic is given forgiveness of his sins and he is told to get up and walk. At that house they glorify God and say we have never seen anything like this
