He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.

He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

Mark 1: 29-39

In this weeks readings Jesus is going on a series of preaching and healing’s. Today’s reading has Jesus attending to Simon’s ailing mother in law. In this particular healing Jesus has a more personal relationship with his patient. She is the mother in law of one of his disciples. The healing also does not take place at a distance, but instead he grasps her and helps her up. These two small details give a small insight into Jesus and what is many times required to gain his benefit. This healing is up close and personal. It is a personal relationship between the teacher and disciple, doctor and patient. Here it is not a battle of philosophies, ideologies, or theologies. These would tend to place distance between Jesus and those who need him. Healing’s here are not a combative argument, but are Jesus entering into our lives at a personal level to heal a specific illness. It is not Jesus in the abstract argument, but as a real presence. In so many ways barriers are placed that keep God and man apart. Jesus reminds us that in order for God to work in us, we have to allow God to take hold of us in a real and personal way,not through simply through impersonal academics that in so many ways define religion.Religion is a subject,God is a presence
