Thirty-third Sunday

Jesus said to his disciples:
“In those days after that tribulation
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
and the stars will be falling from the sky,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

“And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’

If you think of where all of the Gods resided in Jesus’s day, the references to astrological disturbances make perfect sense. They resided in the heavens which is the sky, which is the dome that separates heaven and earth. Jupiter, Neptune, Mars, Apollo,Vulcan, Mercury, and YHWH: they all resided there. All the disturbances then can be seen as a great cosmic battle, a battle of the Gods,  as a flash of lightening, a clamor of thunder, an eclipse, a meteor shower. In the end there is stillness and the Son of Man descends.Who is the Son of Man? In its original meaning the son was simply man plain and simple. With Daniel though the Son of Mans meaning shifts to one who brings peace to Gods Kingdom, one who restores order, and one who delivers Gods Kingdom back to God. Early Christians of course interpret this as Jesus the Christ. Jesus’s mission was about restoration of Gods Kingdom. The violence that occurs before the descent of the Son of Man also tells something else.I tells of the destruction and what comes after. First there is the battle, the death, and then life. Good defeats Evil.Good always endures, evil is always destroyed.Truth lives, lies die. That is the order in Gods Kingdom, and what survives is good. Sometimes it is confusing to look at all sorts of things that go on in the world, and wonder why sometimes bad things always get ahead. It is a challenge of faith to wonder why the wrong things get the reward. The beauty of faith though, is the guarantee that good always wins. God always wins and that is a guarantee. Now the only problem is figuring out what is good.In the past folks had to turn to the heavens to ask that question, and ask Gods they have never seen what to do here on earth. For Christians though, the Son of Man descended: God isn’t just in the heavens but here amongst us and not simply as a ruler but as a guide.Good always triumphs over evil and God sent his son to guide us towards that good. Suddenly the turmoil and tribulations just became much simpler. Enlightening.
