Jericho is described in the Old Testament as the “City of Palm Trees.” It is known as the place of the Israelites’ return from bondage in Egypt, led by Joshua, Moses successor. Settlements in Jericho date back 11,000 years, likely because of its abundance of springs. Jesus passed through Jericho where he healing the blind beggar and inspired the tax-collector Zacchaeus to repent of his dishonest practices. The Parable of the Good Samaritan takes place on the road from Jericho to Jerusalem.
