‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Standard

Thursday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 386
Mt 10:7-15
Jesus gives instructions to his apostles on how to proclaim his gospel message that “The Kingdom of heaven is at Hand.” He says to cure without charge, without advertisement, with outer ornamentation or hint of identification . He says to seek worthy people and bless them and to keep peace. To those who refuse the message, that and their fate their choice. He does not say that one needs to wear a special collar, or have an official title, or that it be their source of funding. Arguably Jesus says quite the opposite. The point made being that Jesus gives all his disciples the ability to spread the good news, not as a profession or livelihood but as a way of faith. He does not describe a mission to be carried out on occasion such as a work assignment. He does not describe a mission to be carried out as soap-box sales pitchman or ministerial official. He does not describe the mission of proclamation to be as if town crier,or even as if singing. Jesus describes his mission of proclaiming “the kingdom of heaven is at hand” to be carried out as if breathing…  .. . . .. .   .
